Your Questions About How To Save On Your Electric Bill

Sharon asks…

CFL’s vs. Standard Bulbs…?

How much more do CFL’s cost?
Do they really save that much $$$ on your electric bill?
Do they really last 10+ years?
Would it be woth it for me to switch out all my bulbs with CFL’s?

rel323 answers:

I use cfl’s and prefer them to standard lights. If you change one bulb your not going to notice any difference but if you change them all your electricity bill will go down. As for lasting 10 years, I havn’t had mine for 10 years and I would imagien they may be exxagerating a little bit, however they last WAY longer than standard bulbs. Also, on a side note I also prefer the type of light they emmit, I don’t like yellow light and cfl’s put out a very clean color spectrum of light.

Paul asks…

YOUR monthly savings in $$ w/ compact fluorescent bulbs?

I’d like to know what dollar amount people have saved from their monthly electric bill by replacing MOST, if not ALL, of their lightbulbs with Compact Fluorescent Bulbs. Of course, everyone’s electricity use and costs are different, as well as the number of bulbs you’re using and what you paid for them to begin with. I just want to know the difference, if any, that you’ve seen on your monthly bill…$1.00 less than before the bulbs? $20 less? Give as much details as you’d like – how many you use, whether you leave them on or turn them off, whatever you’d like. The final dollar amount in savings is what I’m most curious about. Thanks!!
I want to thank everyone for their answers so far, and I hope to get some more. Just for more detail – I’ve switched 6 bulbs and have 6 more to do today. That should take care of all the permanent fixtures in the apartment. I rent a small 2BR duplex/apartment, and I think this kind of a living situation will allow me to see more of a difference in my bill. I try to conserve energy in other ways – turning lights/appliances off when not home, keeping heat low when now home, etc. I also haven’t noticed a difference in light quality, and no hum, no flickering.

rel323 answers:

Depending on how many bulbs you use, you could be looking at around 15-20% lower electric bills… Only you know what your bills are, and you can do the math from here.

Way to go!!…

Donna asks…

Well..so much for going green. Did you catch NBC news last night?

They aired a story about those Eco-friendly-this -will-save-you-money-on-your-electric-bill light bulbs. Yessir, these babies last a lot longer than regular bulbs and use less energy. You all know the ones I mean: those curly light bulbs. The problem is that these bulbs contain MERCURY!!! Gasp! Oh no! NBC said don’t break one or you will have a serious problem. They showed a guy disposing of one like it was hazardous waste because, as the story reported IT IS hazardous waste. General Electric makes the ones I have in my home, NBC reported that there are approximately 4 million of these bulbs being used. Guess what? As good as they might be, they will burn out. Then what in the hell are we supposed to do with them? NBC reprted that they cannot go into a landfill but exactly how would anyone know? So like I said: So much for going green.

rel323 answers:

Yes you have to call out haz mat. The funny part to these bulbs are, you can not throw it in the trash, they must be recycled. I have to drive over 700 miles to find the nearest recycler that will take these bulbs that contain mercury.

question on eden pure heaters?

they claim that you can save 50% on your heating bill. i was wondering if this was true. and if so how much has it increased your electric bill? i am trying to heat a 1500 sq ft. house (2 story) and i would like to decrease my heating bills. (currently between 220.00-370.00/mo)
also, i was wondering if they will be going down on price once spring rolls around or if they stay the same price throughout the year.

thank you in advance for any answers
i am not trying to replace my furnace with it. i was just wondering if it would help me or hurt me financially.

rel323 answers:

Edenpure’s claims are an outright scam. They’re simply a 1500 watt electric heater, and put out no more heat than any other 1500 watt heater at Walmart or anywhere else.

The only way ANY electric heater will save you a penny on heating costs is if you are happy heating just a small area instead, and turn your heat DOWN in the rest of your house. Otherwise, electric heat is one of your most expensive choices. One of these 1500 watt heaters running continuously can cost more than $100 a month to run, depending on what you pay.

Buy an electric heater if you want to heat a small area, and don’t care what it costs to run. Otherwise, don’t get your home heating advice from Paul Harvey. He’s one of the main places these things have been advertised, and he’ll endorse anything for a buck. :)

hybrid electric cars and cost and building one?

i was wondering im only a teen.. i wondered if you are driving the electric cars/gas….yes you are saving money on gas… but how much oney are you having to spend on your home electric bill just to recharge your car.. different areas have different price in electric bills and where i live the price is pretty steep. .so just charing the car is going to cost you home wise….then of course you have to pay for all of the instalation of the elctric system.. you have to get the battery change out…i have heard that there rattled in these hybrid cars when the swtich from gas and go to electric

my main question is…. are you really saving when you buy hybrid cars……..or should you wait on the hybrid cars to come out(later date) so all the kinks in the car are gone…

also wih building a car.. a group of kids and i have a dodge challenger(mine 09 suppercharged i got a new one cult enegry10 srt8 yayyyyme) but what we have done was get a used hhybrid car and took the battery out we have been working on the car for a while to get it to efficenly work on the challenger… it runs smooth and great…. the only problem is that you have to switch it over to hybrid or gas before you turn the car on…. we were wondering is there anyway we could get the car to switch over while the car is on say we are at a red light and want to to it back to gas… what would be a better way to have it.. its a diesel hybrid what we call it.. we did alot of modifacation to make sure it works properly and runs smooth because we still wanted a hot muscle car sound…

so is there anyway we can get the car to switch over while we are driving….

thank you very much,
the future of cars

sorry for my bad spelling

oh and we can get the car to get 23mpg on the electric and 17mpg for just the gas

rel323 answers:

You pay 1/4 as much (to go the same distance in the same car) for electric as you do for gas.

Installing a 220V 30A breaker doesn’t cost much at all. That can charge an electric car at 15 miles per hour (15 miles of range for each hour of charge). That’s as much as you need. For faster charging than that you need to install a special box.

Hybrid cars will get less expensive as the price of the batteries goes down. How much you save in gas depends on the price of gas and how much you drive. Can you predict what the price of gas will be in the next 7 years? Of course not, no one can. But I’ll tell you this, it aint going to go down. At $4.00 per gallon, your savings in gas usually out weighs the higher car payment.

Listen dude, we don’t know what components you’re using in your car or how you have it wired up. How are we supposed to know how to rewire your own creation? But I’ll tell you this, taking off from a red light, it’s better to have electric and diesel at the same time as opposed to just diesel.

People often think of hybridizing as a way of saving fuel, but that’s not actually the case. It’s a way of increasing the power without burning that much more fuel. Some car manufacturers use it as a way of getting super high gas mileage by using a super small engine and still having enough power to move. But you could just as easily use it as a speed mod. Like a super charger or nitrous, only instead of burning more fuel and shortening the life of your engine, you burn the same amount and lengthen the life of your engine.

Robert asks…

How hot is too hot to have the windows in your house open?

We want to save on electricity and open the windows but today is forecast to be a high of 87 degrees here in Florida. I don’t think there will be much of a breeze today. At what temperature do you think it is to hot to open the windows and turn off the A/C? I don’t want to walk around sweating my butt off, but saving money on the electric bill would be great…
Answers in Celsius don’t help because I’m not gonna take the time to convert it.

rel323 answers:

85 degrees…sometimes 75-80…it gets very humid here.

Solar Power

Purpose Statement: The purpose of this speech is to persuade you to use solar power.

Introduction

I.Have you ever wondered how much you spend on your water heating bills and

your electric bills each year?

II.According to the residentialsolarpanels website, you can save up to 80% on

your water heating bills by installing a solar water heating system.

III.This speech is to persuade you to use solar power.

IV.In this speech I will share with you what solar power is, how it will help your

finances, and also how it will help the environment.

(Transition statement: let’s start off with…)

Body

I.What solar power is.

A.Solar power is basically the light and heat that comes from the sun.

1. This sores of power has been used for thousands of years for just those

things, light and heat.

2. It wasn’t until recently that we discovered that the power from the sun

could be used for electricity.

Deschu2

B.Also according to the solarenergy website solar power is a source of

life.

1. The light from the sun is food to the plants, and the plants are

food to not only to us but also to animals.

2. Another way it helps with life on earth is it is our main source of heat, if

we did not have the sun the earth would be to cold for there to be

life.

(Transition statement: Next I will tell you about…)

II.How using solar power can help you save money.

A.Probably the number one reason it will help save you money is the fact

that is its free! Unlike coal, oil, and gas.

B. Like I said earlier just by installing solar energy panels you can save up to

80% on your energy bills.

C.You need to make sure that you install your own solar panels because if

you have them installed for you, you will be spending thousands

more than you need.

(Transition statement: The last thing we will discuss is…)

III.How solar power helps the environment

A.According to WikiAnswers website solar power does not affect the

environment and by not affecting the environment it helps it.

1. In other words solar power does not let off any emissions of any kind,

Deschu3

like gas and coal does.

2. By not using the gas and coal and other things that do affect the

environment in a bad way, but instead using solar power ends up

helping the environment.

B.Also solar power is renewable in other words it wont run out like

nonrenewable sources such as fossil fuels.

(Transition statement: in conclusion…)

Conclusion

I.I hope that through this speech I have persuaded you to consider using

solar power.

II.Next time you get your electricity bill I hope you remember that you can

lower that cost by up to 80% by using solar power.

III.lets begin to make this world a better and cleaner place and use the resources

that God has given us. Thank you!

Hi.
I am a trained voice specialist (as well as Human Right’s Priest) who frequently helps people write speeches or prepare for presentations or performances( acting or singing).
I love helping kids.If you need help in the future and live in Marin, feel free to contact me for help. I sometimes help students for free.
I think your information was basic, clear and good.
Idea One:Content~
I would suggest giving your listeners a a reference resource list of local solar companies with good reputations, and give a sense of the range of prices it normally costs to solar equip homes or businesses( ie with photovoltaic panels, etc.) Money is a real issue for people these days and initial outlays of money sometimes keeps interested people from making a more environmentally conscious shift!
Idea Two: Mechanics~
I would also suggest putting in the bolding, spacing, and other reading tools you might need in order to help you give the speech with greater ease.
I hope it went well. If you have another before the end of the year be sure to ask for help earlier if you’d like. I’d be willing to give you some free assistance! Sincerely, Kaaren
